MERIAN: Wenn Sie ueber den Everest entscheiden koennten, was wuerden Sie tun?

Messner: Ich wuerde versuchen, den Everest als letzten Erfahrungsraum, als unaufgeschluesselte Wildnis zu erhalten. Es gibt dort im Grunde nichts anderes zu holen als Erfahrung. Kein Holz, kein Heu, keine Steine, keine Kristalle, um diese in irgendeiner Form zu nutzen. Frueher war dies der Grund, warum Menschen ueberhaupt auf Berge gingen. Ich habe 2003 mit Edmund Hillary den Ministerpraesidenten von Nepal besucht. Wir haben dafuer plaediert, wie frueher nur eine Genehmigung pro Saison und Aufstiegsroute zu vergeben. So wuerde man erstens das fuerchterliche Gedraenge am Berg vermeiden und zweitens auch weniger Tote haben. Der Praesident hat zugehoert, einmal milde mit dem Kopf genickt, aber nicht mehr.
Es kommen heute viele hunderttausend Euro fuer die Genehmigungen der Gipfeltouren ins Land. Aber das Geld bleibt in Katmandu, bei den entsprechenden Stellen. Die Bergvoelker sehen davon nichts.

> Similar programmes were also organised in Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Chitwan, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, and Nepalgunj today.

> Various political parties, including the main opposition Unified CPN (Maoist), have already pledged to avoid strikes and bandhs in 2011 for the success of the NTY 2011.
